Data and Report Descriptions

About the Data

Data has been collected in the current form since 2014.  Some data is available before 2014 as follows:

  • 2011-2013.   Total Teachers and Programs.   Program Completers by institution.  Collected by the current study in 2014.
  • Prior to 2011.   Data was extracted for prior reports.  Teachers by State.   PC's by State (no institution), Teachers entering SBAE.   In some cases teachers entering SBAE was computed from the reported yield.

How Data is Collected?

Annually teacher educators at institutions with Agricultural Education teacher preparation programs were invited to provide supply data, while state supervisors/executive secretaries are invited to provide demand data. Both supply and demand instruments were developed in Qualtrics and distributed via email.     Multiple follow-up requests were made to each non-respondent and alternate contacts in some cases.  In many cases not all sections of the survey were completed.   Incomplete sections are excluded on section specific queries (e.g., race, reasons for teachers leaving).  Data may be extracted using the queries, charts, or maps described below.  See instruments.

Data Quality

The project conducts an inspection of the survey data.  When values that are not reasonable are reported an attempt to reconcile with the respondent is made.   If the data cannot be reconciled then it will be marked as invalid and omitted from most queries.   Since surveys have multiple sections marking is done by section.   For example if a state has been reporting 55 female teachers and 45 male teachers, then reports 60 male teachers and 50 female teachers this data would be questioned.  Another example might be if a state reported 95 part-time teachers and 5 full-teachers.   These are not reasonable values and are likely data entry errors.   For example 1.6% (to date) of the reported number of teachers have been flagged as invalid.

Interpolated Data

Data on this site is the raw data collected unless noted as interpolated.  Since the response rate differs between years an interpolated data set is provided by imputing missing or invalid data.   This is helpful in estimating true totals for year to year comparison.  Missing data is imputed using a weighted linear method.   This method is similar to linear regression, but gives more weight to values closer to the missing value.  In addition at least three actual values are required to impute missing values and the imputed value must be zero or greater.   On average 11% of supply and 12% of demand data is imputed.  However this is estimated to only change the total data values by approximately 7% as many non-respondents are from small states or institutions.   Data is re-imputed every year as new data is available.
